Haroun and the sea of Stories

Charles Wuorinen brings Salman Rushdie’s children’s novel to life with musical wit. Soprano Heather Buck rejoins BMOP as the titular Haroun on a fantastical adventure in a make-believe world, based loosely on Bombay and Kashmir. Along the way Haroun meets fanciful imagined creatures, all sung by some of the best singers Boston and the US have to offer. This all-star cast, James Fenton’s cleverly adapted libretto, and Wuorinen’s intricate score offer a musical delight on BMOP/sound’s world premiere recording of Haroun and the Sea of Stories.

Set primarily in a Bronx hospital from 1966 to the end of 1969, it tells the true story of the eminent neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks, who received worldwide acclaim for bringing new hope to survivors of the “sleeping-sickness” epidemic of the 1920s.
